What is Obalon?
Obalon is the only intragastric (situated within the stomach) balloon system that is swallowed rather than placed surgically. It is fully-reversible. The treatment can jumpstart significant weight loss with balloons that produce the sensation of “fullness.” The patient swallows a high-tech capsule, about the size of a vitamin pill, that holds the balloon. When the capsule reaches the stomach, which is verified with an X-ray, the capsule dissolves, and the balloon filled with gas. The result is a lightweight balloon, about the size of an orange, that floats in the stomach, filling the area so that less food is consumed.
How Obalon Works
At the Athenix Body Sculpting Institute in Seattle, we have selected this system to help our patients who want to rid themselves of a great deal of excess weight. During treatment, three balloons are placed within the stomach at intervals. At the end of the treatment, six months after the first balloon is placed, we remove all balloons endoscopically, on an out-patient basis. To ensure the weight loss sticks for the long term, we work closely with each person we treat to develop healthy eating habits and a simple exercise program that they can genuinely maintain.
Am I a Candidate for Obalon?
Obalon was created to treat individuals over the age of 22 with a body mass index of 30 to 40 kg/m2 who are committed to following a diet and exercise program. Obalon is a great way to jumpstart the weight loss process, and can produce impressive results. Diet and exercise are critical points in maintaining a healthy weight for the years ahead. Does Obalon require downtime or recovery?
One of the greatest positives about the Obalon system is it involves no recovery or downtime after the balloon has been placed in the stomach. Plus, the placement of each balloon takes as little as ten minutes to complete, and you can return to your regular activities immediately.
How much weight can I lose with Obalon?
Past patients with the Obalon balloon system have experienced a 30 to 50-pound weight loss with one treatment. However, weight loss results vary from patient to patient, and maintaining a healthy weight after treatment is dependent upon the patient’s eating and exercise habits both during treatment and after completion.
Does Obalon require sedation?
Obalon does not require sedation or surgery. You will simply swallow a small capsule that holds the balloon. Once it reaches the stomach, the balloon is inflated with gas. During the endoscopic procedure to remove the balloons, only light conscious sedation is needed for patient comfort.
